New Recess Policy

Attention Parents!

Harmony has recently changed the recess policy for cold weather. We are now allowed to take students outside for recess if the temperature is above 40° and all students have a jacket. Please, please, please! make sure your child is properly dressed for the day. Yes, Texas’ cold winter days are coming to an end, but there is still the occasional cold front. It is important that the students have their recess time so that their energy goes and my sanity stays!

Poppin' For AR Points!

Kindergarten has started working on earning AR (Accelerated Reader) points!

AR is a program where students read books, or have books read to them, and then take a quiz over the books they read.  Each quiz is worth a certain amount of points, depending on the difficulty level of the book read. Typically each book’s quiz is worth 0.5 points

Each six weeks, every student has a goal of three points. Every time a student reaches their goal they will receive a “free shirt” pass. This is a red wrist bracelet that your child can wear to school on a designated day along with a school appropriate shirt of their choice. Also, students that reach their goal get to add a popcorn piece to our class popcorn bucket. At the end of the year, students with 4 popcorn pieces will earn a free ticket to the movies!

We are already off to a great start!

But wait! There is more!

To help your child reach their goal, please make sure they are reading each night. Have them read a book to you, or you may read a book to them. Once your child finishes a book and is ready to take a comprehension quiz on the book, send me a note or an email with the book title and author. I will then be able to allow them to take a quiz in class. Quizzes are only for the classroom, but you can be reading nightly with your child!

Thank you for your support with helping your student reach their AR goal!

Perot Museum Field Trip

I am thrilled to say that we are taking a field trip to the new Perot Science Museum! It is even more exciting that the field trip is FREE to all students.

So far, about ½ the class has returned their permission slips (which is wonderful) but there has only been 2 parent volunteers! In order for this field trip to be safe and successful, we need at least 6 adults (6 adults would mean each group has 4 kids). I will gladly take all parents that want to come. Field trips are a wonderful opportunity to bond with your child and become a part of their life at school.

If you are able to come PLEASE do! Just check the box that says “Yes! I want to volunteer to chaperone” located at the bottom of the permission slip. If you have already turned in your child’s form (thank you for your promptness) and you can just send me an email or a note in your child’s folder letting me know that you can attend.

Unfortunately, parent volunteers will need to pay. The cost is $10 per adult. I will send a note home soon with more details and information.

Thank you for your support! We could not do this without you!

We Made It To Friday!

We made it to Friday! It has been a long, but good, week. Everyone is working hard to get back to our normal routine. Students this semester have more responsibilities and are expected to listen with fewer warnings.

Next week we will start our spelling words again. Students are expected to practice their words each night in addition to their normal daily homework. Please make sure that your child is doing their homework. Many times I have seen a parent’s or an older sibling’s handwriting on the homework page. Homework assigned is for the students to complete. Remember that it is good to work with your child, but make sure that your child is the one doing most of the thinking and all of the writing!

I am so excited to see where the rest of this year takes us! Everyone has been working so hard and is doing a great job. Before you know it, it is going to be time for Kindergarten Graduation!

Grinch Day

The last day of school before winter break we had our Grinch Party! Everyone wore their green spirit shirts to celebrate! We had a blast reading the story of How the Grinch Stole Christmas and completing lots of Grinch activities. At the end of the day we got to watch The Grinch. The best part of the day was when we got to eat our green Grinch cookies and Grinch floats.
This is how the Grinch cookies looked before baking them:
This is how they turned out! They are more green on the inside...
