Cool Penguin Unit

We spent two weeks learning all about penguins! It was such a fun unit. We even got to see what it would be like if we actually were a penguin. Check it out!

Here we are seeing what it would be like if we had a layer of fat like a penguin:

~First we stuck one finger in a jar of petroleum jelly.

~Then we stuck the finger with the jelly, and a finger without any jelly, into a bowl of ice cold water!

~Man! It sure was cold for one finger!

Then we tried placing one hand in a bowl of cold water and our other hand in bag lined with Crisco. The baggie of fat sure did keep our hand warm.

We went outside for our final experiments.

Here we are seeing how the cold feels in a large, spread-out circle. Brrr!

Here we are able to gain some warmth from our close neighbors.

Our final step was to place an egg on our feet and try to waddle like a daddy penguin! Don’t let your egg fall!

We also did a little penguin math. Each student got to make their own penguin and add any amount of two different colored fish. The students then had to add up how many fish their penguin had.
